WASHINGTON: A missile interceptor launched from a navy warship has struck a dying American spy satellite orbiting 130 miles over the Pacific Ocean, the Pentagon announced late Wednesday. Officials cautioned that while early information indicated that the interceptor’s “kill vehicle” had hit the satellite, it would be 24 hours before it could be determined whether the fuel tank with 1000 pounds of toxic hydrazine had been destroyed as planned. Even so, one official who received a late-night briefing on the mission expressed confidence that the impact had been so powerful that the fuel tank probably had been ruptured. Completing a mission in which an interceptor designed for missile defense was used for the first time to attack a satellite, the Lake Erie, an Aegis-class cruiser, fired a single missile just before 10:30 pm Eastern time, and the missile hit the satellite as it traveled at more than 17000 miles per hour, the Pentagon said in its official announcement. “A network of land-, air-, sea- and spaced-based sensors confirms that the US military intercepted a nonfunctioning National Reconnaissance Office satellite which was in its final orbits before entering the Earth’s atmosphere,” the statement said. By early Wednesday, three navy warships were in position in the Pacific Ocean to launch the interceptors and to track the mission. @RobertsDigital What are the chances that the debris mass would be equal to the mass required to maintain an orbit would being boosted to space due to decay? This satellite was dead, decaying, full of hydrazine, & the tank was expected to survive re-entry according to the military of course, but even if it was not true, the smaller the mass at that height, the more pull earths gravity would have on that object, thus making it decay anyway. So how much debris is left behind? Practically none.

@bestamerica China was the first to shoot down their spy satellite …face the facts and stop counting your chickens!
The US did this in retaliation to prove to china it can also do the same. There is however a bigger problem. The more satellites are shot down, the more the outer earths atmosphere is likely to be littered with dense space junk and debris which may end up being dangerous for space travellers.

There are obviously some satellites further out into space generating a 3D data grid for this to be possible. And the only way to shoot a missile without it being intercepted like this is to have a secondary missile on it to intercept the interceptor. It is not rocket science
