@LordZontar well in all respect, the trailer did specifically say “a big sprawling space saga of rebelion and romance” so It did hint that this was more than just one movie, or they wouldn’t have mentioned anything about a saga. I do agree though, I don’t know if he intented this to be part 4 or not, but he is after all, George Lucas, if he can think up a movie like star wars, I don’t doubt what he can do ^_^

@Marbles471 I was a kid in the 70s and saw this in the theatre. It was AMAZING! We had never seen special effects so great! I agree today it is hard to be impressed.

@OropherThranduil
My dad is always trying to convey to me what a mindblowing experience that shot was when people first saw it in theaters.

I envy his generation in a way, because they got to experience a lot of groundbreaking things when they were new and exciting. They got to be SURPRISED. People hadn’t become jaded yet. Today, the envelope has been pushed so far, I feel like there’s nothing left to amaze people. And even when there is, people like to pretend they’re not amazed. XP

@DPWfan10

I saw Phantom Menace for the first time since it was in theaters a few days ago. Have to say—-it wasn’t as bad as I remembered it. Even Jar Jar didn’t seem as ubiquitous as he was in my memory. I guess with distance it’s aged okay. I just REALLY REALLY wish they’d found a better actor to play child Anakin. Like the kid who played child Boba Fett in Ep. II. They should have picked a kid like *that!* All brooding and intense. THAT kid I could imagine turning into Vader.

what a fucking knackered trailor!

Oh, I remember seeing this trailer on TV so long ago… BTW, this puts the lie to any claim made after the fact by Lucas that the whole trilogy was preplanned. I can clearly remember when the movie was, just simply, “Star Wars”. No “Episode IV”. No “A New Hope”. Lucas ended up with a success beyond his wildest dreams and those of 20th Century Fox, and that’s where the “trilogy’ came from. Not to deny the man his due though, as I will be forever grateful he made this film.

@arsenalrulez1000 Not really… This wasn’t a typical trailer for the time. I know, I was a teenager at the time.

Saw it at Manns Chinese theatre in the summer of 1977, my brother and I just missed the placing of foot and hand prints of C3PO, R2-D2 & Darth Vader.
I was 15.
This trailer and the one from Jaws are the ones I remember from back then.

@SpazzyLoLazzy Except that fights didn’t make the original trilogy what it is today. The story and characters did.
Also,

Battle of Hoth > Battle of Geonosis
Battle of Endor > Battle of Utapau
Luke’s duel on Cloud City > Anakin’s duel with Dooku
Luke and Vader’s duel on the Death Star > Obi-Wan and Anakin’s duel

the original trilogy is superior in every way to the prequels. you could argue that the choreography for the lightsaber duels in the set of prequels are superior to the original star wars (a new hope…). However, the emotional content in the major duels in empire strikes back and return of the jedi make the overall scenes and fight much better in my opinion. i will say that the duel at the end of revenge of the sith was great on an emotional level and the choreography was great.

@SpazzyLoLazzy You fail. The point of the original trilogy was to be more than just good fights and explosions…a point which didn’t come across in the prequels.

Wow! Whoever edited this should have had their ass kicked.

I will say, though, that I imagine this trailer was put together WELL before any major editing on the film actually started. I could be wrong, it’s just a hunch.

I saw StarWars in ’77 when I was 5 years old.(37 now) It was part of a double feature at a drive-in in California. The first movie was forgettable to be sure but I have loved the story of StarWars ever since. But honestly what the hell was up with that turd of a trailer. Ah the seventies.
