We got this on a whim the other day because I felt so bad for my 4 year old son when he had to get a shot for strep and he was such a trooper about it, I rarely buy any toys for him without reading reviews.

Anyhoo, it’s pretty cool I guess — I was a little disappointed that the whole blade wasn’t spring action but now that I saw some reviews about the spring action blade light sabers I am glad this one just has the pop-out spikes at the base (purely for decoration, not dangerous) that so far work great. At least with the telescoping blade if he hits against something too hard it will collapse and won’t do too much damage. My son loves to go between good guy and bad guy (red for Sith and green for Jedi) with a quick switch. The sound effects are pretty good too — if you hit it against something it reacts. All in all a pretty good for a rare impulse purchase — plus it will go with his halloween costume (if he doesn’t change mind before then!)

This DOES NOT have a spring action blade (you get the impression that it does from the pictures on the box). I don’t know the correct terms, but part of the blade does not go into the handle (the hilt?) like the other lightsabers do. It does have the cool light changing feature when you hit the button (and the spikes do spring up from that action, but the impression that you get from the box is that the blade would spring). Since the blade does not go into the handle, I really don’t know how long the plastic blade will last, so this might be better for an older child that would take care of his/her toys(my son is 3 1/2 but a huge Star Wars fan).

I have all four versions of these lightsabers and this one is the coolest but least durable of them all. Unlike the other three, this one is not spring-loaded so it is somewhat safer, since it doesn’t knock the dickens out of the person in front of it. This kind of makes it less fun than the other ones (j/k).

The blade itself doesn’t tuck all the way into the hilt but rather leaves a good 10 inches of blade still visible. Not a problem, but some people might not like that it doesn’t completely tuck in.

Also, the light on this lightsaber can change colors (green or red) and the hilt has the option of spikes opening on it (harmless plastic for all the concerned parents out there).

These lightsabers have been played with and tossed around (as toys should be) and have still stood the test of three rambunctious boys. RECOMMENDED!

Bought 4 of these for nephew’s gifts. 3 worked great. 1 never worked. A bit of a pain to install the batteries into these light sabers. The type of toy where you have to use a screwdriver to install the batteries and try to hold the end on while replacing the screws. The ones that worked are very cool. The sound effects are impressive to the 4-10 boys. I would buy these again, even though they aren’t very durable. We are used to swords and such getting broken and being replaced.

I saw this light saber with all the other “Force Action” light sabers & liked that the blade could change colors. Amazon’s description even states that this is a spring action blade. THIS DOES NOT HAVE A SPRING ACTION BLADE! Only the spikes spring open at the touch of a button. The blade is collapsible and is manually extended. Don’t buy this if that feature is of interest to you…we’re very disappointed.
