I am actually a 28 year old Star Wars geek who animates LEGOs as a hobby who got this for his birthday from a very patient and understanding wife. I’ve been waiting 3 years for Lego to bring back the Gunship and it’s back with mixed results.

The construction method is genius. The cockpits, wings, doors, cargo bay, and nose section are each separate sections that snap together upon completion. The only problem came when the nose section snapped to the cargo bay section, the columns were not sturdy and fell apart twice before snapping together. Together, however, they were very sturdy. As a completed gunship, the set is very sturdy and built with finger grips so a child could easily hold it.

The two weakenesses in the set design are that there are not enough knobs in the cargo bay to hold several clone figures and that the rear of the ship is wide open and not closed. The ramp is not anywhere near wide enough to protect the rear cargo bay. That can easily be fixed by adding some pieces of your own to it.

My main complaint is that for a $119.99 set you only get 5 minifigures. Amazon’s product description says 4 clones. You really only get 2, Cody and another. The point of the Gunship is to carry a platoon of troopers into battle. The set only comes with enough to pilot it. Hopefully, LEGO will release more $9.99 sets at the end of December that come with 4 troopers and a small vehicle so you can load your gunship.

I got this Lego republic gunship set for my twelve year old son and he overall was mostly happy with it.

Pros: This Starwars the Clone Wars Lego set was awesome! It had five mini figures of characters from the story and I was so happy when I got Obi-Wan Kenobi, Plo Koon, Clone Commander Cody, Clone Trooper, and Asajj Ventress so I could have another character to fight.

Cons: One of the problems was that when I was playing with it up the stairs and holding it by the top part (as it shows in the commercials) the top part and the bottom part split completely open and pieces fell all over the stairs. But when I thought I had gathered all the Lego pieces up, the ship looked exactly like how it was supposed to be except that I had one piece leftover. So I did some durability tests. My results were I had a total of two crashes first then five successes. So I flipped through the instruction booklet to see if I could find out where the spare piece was supposed to go. But I couldn’t find out. So I just let it be. The other problem was that the small cargo bay doors were loose. So when I flew it up with the doors open, they just swung back.

Features: The really cool features were the sliding cargo bay doors, flick missiles, and multi clone trooper cockpits. The mini speeder was really cool too. And the medical pod was a nice Lego piece, but it was a little bit small for a clone trooper.

Secret Feature: There is a hidden flipping door. Well, it’s not really hidden because you could still open it. It’s that thing that’s right under the clone trooper pilot cockpit it’s the thing that you put the Armed Kowakian Monkey Lizard/Dancing Twilek Girl sticker on. If you have built it right. You have to carefully lift the top part of the door out and lift it up. That’s supposed to be the place where you put the little radar station in. To make it fit, you first have to take out the handles of the little radar station at the left and right edge sides. That way it will fit.

Overall: This was THE BEST LEGO SET I EVER HAD!!! Despite the flaws, this was my best Lego set ever. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO ANY STARWARS THE CLONE WARS LEGO FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a Christmas gift for my 8 year old son. He was extremely delighted when he saw it. Assembly took him about 2 days. This toy is very playable as it doens’t come apart easily like some lego toys do. It is a very good design and captures the Gunship pretty accurately.

Some people have been saying that this set is not very durable, and falls apart esily. I don’t want to be rude, but all the reviews saying this occured when the set belonged to a fairly young child. This set is very durable, and meant for MILD play. This is definately one of LEGO’s best SW sets ever!
