Darth Maul is the only character in a movie to use a double edge lightsaber. However its more prevalent in other media (comics, games, novels etc). According to the star wars history It was already created by the sith long before maul or sidious even existed.

He’s awsomely cute! How’s that? And just so you know, he’s been in X-Men (Toad), Star Wars (duh, Darth Maul), G I Joe (Snake Eyes), Sleepy Hollow (Headless Horseman), and Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (A. J. Ross). He also choreographed the lightsaber duels in Star Wars: Episode 1.
