Creating Basic Lightsabers in Adobe After Effects Tutorial HD

By Top Star Wars Toys, May 31, 2010 Star Wars Videos

This is my own tutorial on how to create lightsabers using the program Adobe After Effects. It covers all of the basics of creating a lightsaber in Adobe After Effects. More extensive tricks will be covered in the future. I originally learned from Ryan Weiber’s tutorial, and have since built on it and changed it around, until I have finally settled on a method which I believe yields the best results. This tutorial covers the rotoscoping method, rounding the ends, and blurring to create a “light” effect. I have recorded and uploaded this in full HD for the best possible tutorial; the only downside being is that when I recorded, when I played the clip it lagged, but otherwise, this tutorial is perfect for beginners learning to use Adobe After Effects.

@Hector95100 No, because they had a huge team of rotoscapers, whereas on these movies it’s just one person.

so this is what star wars used. if they did it must have taken them months to do the whole movie where there are lightsabers

First, thank you for the video! I’m having a weird problem where, after animating the mask frame by frame, the mask is off the same path that it was on when I created it. For example, it starts to the left of the original location when it starts and corrects over time… any ti ps?

Great Tutorial! Thank you! I noticed that your mouse has a little bulls eye when you click. May I ask how you get it to do that? Thanks again!

The end product was really cool, but just out curiosity wouldn’t it be easier to just use the Beam effect? Doesn’t it do the exact same but with less work making the solid? Overall though great tutorial.

@changraoul CS3 is the exact same. The only differences between the two are some effects and plugins, nothing major.

@IlovemyJesus490 then just make a black solid instead of a white solid, and skip the color balance step

I don’t know why this got a negative. The uploader didn’t take any part in this video at all, it’s just a repost of an already popular vid. In fact, it has Ebaum’s World stuck at the bottom of it. People are commenting and asking questions like the uploader made it.

I gave you a thumbs up.
